If you’re in the market for a remodel or a renovation, your first step is figuring out who to contact to get your project underway. The thing is, you may not be exactly sure if you should look for an architect, a general contractor or an interior designer.
While all these professionals deal with renovation and remodels, their skills and responsibilities are not one and the same. Yes, some firms (like ours) offers both architectural services and interiors – but knowledge is power and understanding the differences between architectural design and interior design can guide you to the right team for your project and give you an idea of when you might need either service in the future.
A quick Google search will lead you to the definition of architecture as the art and science or technique of designing buildings or structures. Where the design aspect comes in, is where the form and function of architecture meet the aesthetics of design.
To practice, architects must obtain a license – this includes receiving a degree from an accredited program, meeting jurisdiction requirements, gaining required experience, passing the ARE exam, and more. Architects must be well-versed in the technical aspects of a building that encompass the health, safety and well-being of a building inclusive of its inhabitants (you) and its environment (we’re looking at you South Florida).
Architectural Design is a phase in every architectural project when functionality and aesthetics blend cohesively. Put simply, this is where we think beyond a new wall here or removing a wall there – and think about how the space will function and look.
We consider how you will move about your kitchen, how much space you need between your countertops and your island, how a Butler’s Pantry door will swing and how much space you need before you are reaching a shelf to pick up some flour when you’re baking that cake. Not to mention, we consider how the natural light of the room will flood in and how much additional lighting we want to consider and where.
Once you’ve designed the fundamentals of your home, it’s time to look towards the interiors. Our favorite way to describe it is like this: If you took a house and turned it upside-down, whatever would stay in place is the product of interior design. This includes hardware, appliances, windows, flooring, lighting, cabinetry, and so much more. (Side note: whatever falls out – that’s décor, but more on that later.)
The focus of interior design is to evoke an aesthetic that speaks to the homeowner’s unique preferences and lifestyle. It’s the fun part – especially for you, the homeowner. Designers work with you to select all the elements to help you create a space that you absolutely love.
While interiors may be everyone’s favorite part of a renovation project, an architect’s role is the foundation. Quite literally at times. If there are structural elements that are going to be impacted as part of your project, you need an architect. Oftentimes (and we’ve seen this a time or two), contractors or other professionals in the industry may recommend against using an architect. We get it – finding ways to cut costs sounds great. Right up until the point where you realize that having an experienced, trained and licensed architect would save you time, money and a lot of stress.
Trust us, we’ve seen it.
Interiors can come in without ever needing to change the structure of a space. For example, if you simply want to update your primary bath without impacting where the shower, toilet or vanity sit but want to replace tile and hardware – this is a strictly interiors project.
These days, the terms “interior designer” and “architect” are often used interchangeably. At Debowsky Design Group, we use both terms because we are an architectural firm that offers interior design.
As we mentioned, there are definitely projects where you only need to hire someone to help with interiors. However, there are also certain situations in where you need to hire an architect. High-end new construction, for example, or large scale renovations. Heck, even small scale renovations. Your best bet is to call a reputable, experienced architectural firm and seek their advice and recommendations when starting any project for your home.
During your research, you may find that some architecture firms are just as adept at interior design, and the Debowsky Design Group is one of them. Whether you’re looking to renovate or build new, our 20+ years of local expertise is fully capable of creating the home of your dreams.
After your first meeting with us, you’ll have no doubt that this is a team that has you covered on all fronts. Give us a call and let’s get your project underway!
