…a house is not a home until you love where you live…

The Difference Between Interior Design and Home Decor

If you’re in the market for a remodel or just looking to upgrade your space, you’re probably seeing a lot of terms like home design, interior design, home décor, and renovation.

If all these terms have gotten a bit jumbled in your mind – don’t fret – you’re not alone. In fact, it’s even common to see some who work in our industry use the terms incorrectly. That’s why we wanted to set the record straight once and for all.

Interior Design vs. Home Décor

Interior design can be defined in a myriad of ways. One of our favorites is referring to it as the “art, science, and business of planning a creative, technical, sustainable, and functional interior solution that corresponds to the architecture of a space.” In addition, interior design when done well has to also capture the style and aesthetics that responds to a particular person’s needs. Another way to think about this: if you took a house and turned it upside-down, whatever would stay in place is the product of interior design (hardware, appliances, windows, flooring, lighting, cabinetry, tiling, and so much more).

Interior design is a lot more than first impressions may allow. In fact, interior designers work on a project from conceptual development and space planning to site inspections and design execution. So, what does all that mean? Essentially, interior design is there to make sure that a room, such as a kitchen, is functional for all its designated purposes while also evoking an aesthetic that creates a positive and healthy reaction for the people who will be using or living within the space.

Home Décor – short for home decoration, interior décor encompasses items and you guessed it, decorations, that make your home look nice. This can include a range of items such as furniture, art, plants, and accessories. Going back to the same analogy used with interior design, home décor is everything that would not stay in place if you turned a room upside-down. Home décor can be easily changed or updated to impact the existing space – pillows, bedding, lamps, furniture. And typically, you don’t need a professional to help you with home décor – although, many interior designers will help you here as well.
