…a house is not a home until you love where you live…

When Renovating or Building Your Home It’s Important to Pick Your Moments

When we meet with new clients for design projects, our first task is understanding how you use your home. If you’ve never been asked this question before, you might not know how to answer it. That’s why we often phrase it a different way by asking: What are your favorite moments in your home?

In other words, what do you love doing in your home? Do you love cooking? Entertaining? Watching movies or TV? Taking baths?

This information helps us figure out which areas of your home are most important to you and where the quality time will be spent when designing the home of your dreams.

Choosing your moments can also help you determine when to splurge and when to save when selecting design elements for your project.

What is Your Lifestyle?

Your lifestyle and interests typically determine how you use your home. Yes, everyone technically uses their kitchen, their bathroom, their bedroom, etc. But which spaces do you truly love? Which moments in your home do you cherish?

For example, do you cherish unwinding on a big comfy couch after a long day at work? Or, do you cherish preparing and enjoying meals with your family? Here in Miami, many homeowners cherish the privacy and tranquility of their backyards, their go-to spot for pondering life’s biggest decisions.

Once we have an idea of your favorite spaces, we like to ask what would make these moments even sweeter. What kind of moments do you want to create in your new home?

For instance, if you love reading and recharging in solitude, maybe you’re envisioning yourself having an exclusive space for these relaxing activities, so you’re not interfering with the rest of your family’s actions. Maybe you’re envisioning yourself having a bigger kitchen where you can easily entertain more than 10 guests at once. Another common dream scenario is envisioning yourself walking around a giant walk-in closet, taking your time while carefully selecting the perfect outfit.

When to Splurge and Save

Choosing your moments shows you which spaces are special to you. These are the aspects of your renovation where it makes sense to devote a good portion of your budget.

If relaxing on the couch is important to you, then don’t be afraid to splurge on the perfect living room. If you love cooking, then the kitchen deserves more of your budget.

On the other hand, it wouldn’t make sense to splurge on design elements that aren’t related to your favorite parts of your home. For example, if grilling is your passion and showering is just something you have to do, spending $125,000 on to build a spa-like bathroom would be less useful than building the perfect space to be the backyard pitmaster.

Your Moments are Your Dreams

Design projects can be expensive, but it’s worth every penny if you know the money is going towards a house that truly speaks to your interests and lifestyle.

In our industry, we use the term “dream home” and we often ask clients to envision their idea of the “perfect” home. What does this mean? A home that’s perfectly suited for your moments, and the moments you want to make. In this sense, your moments are your dreams. So, it’s definitely something to keep in mind when you started thinking seriously about renovating.
