…a house is not a home until you love where you live…

Is It Too Late For You To Build New?

So, your kids are grown, have left the nest, and you’re alone in a home that looks more like a teenage hangout than the forever home you’ve always dreamed of. Now that you are an empty nester (sounds weird, doesn’t it?), you can do whatever you want with your home and create something that accurately reflects you.

Should you go for it?

You might be thinking, “Sure, I can afford it, but what’s the point?” The point is that you have a lot of life to live in your home, so why not splurge a little (or a lot) and get the space you always wanted?

Where to Begin When Building New

Starting a project to build your own home is definitely a major undertaking, and it is not for the faint of heart. While it can be difficult, it is extremely rewarding. The good news is that it is never too late to build new.

We have worked with couples who have been married upwards of 40 years start on a new journey with their home. They jumped on the opportunity to build a space that not only reflected their styles but also allowed them to age in place, giving their grown children a little extra peace of mind as well.

When building new, here are a few tips to consider:

  • The first place you want to start is with the land. Consider if you want to move to a new neighborhood or a find bigger lot, or even a smaller one.
  • Second, determine how much are you willing to spend. This is a crucial step in the planning process and one that will shape everything going forward. Be sure to clearly communicate your spending cap with those that you choose to work with.
  • Third, think of what means the most to you when it comes to how you envision living in your new space. How do you want to interact with each space, who will be living and how often will family be visiting. This is where you need architectural drawings to come in to help.
  • Lastly, the fun part. Work with your design team to pick fixtures, appliances, and design spaces that work for aging in place.
